Rejection Statement on the U.S. Decision to Recognizing Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights
on the U.S. Decision to Recognizing Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights
The Arab Liberal Federation (ALF), as an Arab institution defending the Arabs’ rights & interests and the territorial integrity of each Arab country, condemns the decision taken by U.S. President Donald Trump on 22/3/2019 to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. This decision is contrary to the international laws, norms and the relevant United Nations resolutions. The Arab Liberal Federation (ALF) strongly condemns the interference of the U.S. in Syria's internal affairs which would increase the risk of war and destruction in the Middle East. This unfair decision is not the first of this American administration. It has already taken a similar decision with the same incorrect logic of recognizing the Israel’s sovereignty over the East Jerusalem and the transfer of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, as a prelude to the deal of the century aimed at the liquidation of the Palestinian cause. As a result of these decisions, the positions of this American administration are not eligible as an honest and impartial mediator between the Arabs and Israelis.
The Golan is a Syrian land occupied by Israel in 1967. It was annexed in 1981, and a decision of a president doesn’t change its occupied character. The international legitimacy represented by all United Nations resolutions, especially those of the Security Council, stipulates that Golan is occupied Syrian territory and an integral part of the Syrian Arab Republic, which clearly and explicitly states that a land cannot be forcibly seized. We recall here Security Council resolution 497 of 1981, which "rejected Israel's decision to annex the occupied Golan and affirmed the illegality of Israel's imposition of its legislations and administration on the occupied Syrian Golan and considered this decision null and void."
Therefore, the Arab Liberal Federation (ALF) condemns this decision, as condemned by all the countries and international institutions in the world, and hope that the American administration will return to its senses and stop making such incorrect decisions that put the region on the verge of a new crisis and tensions threatening to seriously destabilize the Middle East. We affirm the need to reach a solution that preserves the unity and cohesion of Syria and reinforces its security, stability and role in the joint Arab action system, and to create conditions for the return of the Syrian refugees to their homeland in order to contribute to its reconstruction.
